Title:
Old Soldier.
For the nineteen fourteen-eighteen war
He was called again as he'd been before
There was always room for just one more
In the fight for liberty.
He was told to go, he had no choice
As a working man he had no voice
Little reason to rejoice
As he joined his company.
There when he was needed.
For the enemy they proved too strong
The celebrations lasted long
The hungry thirties came along
Unemployment too.
The heroes of ten years before
Had now become the nation's poor
He'd eaten better in the war
And there was always work to do.
There when he was needed.
From thirty-nine to forty-five
He did his best to stay alive
A constant battle to survive
In a war that had no rules.
The future with bright dreams was filled
No time to dwell on who got killed
A broken country to rebuild
And they handed him the tools.
There when he was needed.
The years have passed, our hero's old
He suffers badly from the cold
He's weak and tired and not so bold
As when he went to war.
His friends are dying all around
He's grateful for the home he's found
But now they say they'll pull it down
And build a super-store.
There; just what we needed
