Title:
The Shore - A Villanelle
That confusion of scale and scope - the shore
Where you have skimmed with flat pebbles for hours
Cares nothing of what we have done before
Lasting theme of rhythmic shanties and lore
Where children are lost in sandy towers
That confusion of scale and scope - the shore
Whilst we have treasured all the things we saw
The shore, with its coves and salt-loving flowers
Cares nothing of what we have done before
I ponder the horizon ever more
To fathom something of it’s arcane powers;
That confusion of scale and scope - the shore
While you flick and watch as your sleek stones soar
The shore, that many an aching eye scours
Cares nothing of what we have done before
Your spinning pebbles start their own rapport
As you make games with what the sea devours
That confusion of scale and scope - the shore
Cares nothing of what we have done before
