Title: Canal

As lazy water trembles side to side
beneath cool spring sunshine,
nervous moorhens peep through rushes
shared with bright-eyed water voles.
Iris petals open joyfully to its welcoming rays,
long stems, green swords spearing
the grassy verges of the tow-path.
Narrow-boats casually chunter by,
wending past farm-lands, villages and towns.
Past brick works, ironware, docks and bridges,
before, at last, meandering through city suburbs,
it is absorbed by the busy river,
its lazy habits tossed unfeelingly
towards the coast. Moorhens giving way
to sea-gulls, gannets, ocean boats, into the bustle
and vast expanse of a busy sea.
