Title:
Pecking Order
Winter is upon us again.
With its crisp night air
And icy refrain.
The birds amass
In my back garden
It’s hard finding worms
as the ground has now hardened.
I spread them a banquet
Of chopped nuts and seeds.
They squabble and bicker
As they all try to feed.
From small wrens to thrushes
They bob in the bushes.
Robins and blackbirds
Trill as they eat.
Starlings and sparrows
Never conceding defeat.
They swoop as I feed them
Then whoosh as they go.
I hope they're well-nourished
Before we have snow.
