That supportive base
I love our language. It has great beauty; wonderful words. Festival - Celebrity - Engineer - Capacity. Each word light on the tongue, sweet on sound. But - ( a cruel word) today I cleaned the silver; my newly-burnished Inca god-head shone happily on his plinth. On his what? His plinth. Oh - no I could write “on his lower square slab” or “heavy supportive base” - even “projecting wall-sconce” - but I’m stuck with plinth. What distant Lexicographer thought up “plinth
